One of the University of Liège’s primary missions is to conduct research and train researchers. A Ph.D. is regarded there as a program ofexcellence, marking the start of a young researcher’s career, as they learn to conduct research through research itself.

ULiège has nearly 2,500 doctoral students—men and women from multicultural and international backgrounds—who are as passionate as they are creative and persevering. Each of them is pursuing a doctoral project that extends well beyond national borders through their publications and participation in conferences, symposia, and training programs. Doctoral students energize the research units and also contribute to the dissemination of knowledge within society at large through the many outreach activities in which they actively participate.

Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech is home to 436 doctoral students: 28% are Belgian nationals, 9% are European nationals, and 63% are non-EU nationals (of whom 45% are from Africa and 53% from Asia). (2025–2026 figures).
