The Botanical Garden of Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech

Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech is equipped with a new educational and didactic tool for its bioscience engineering students: a botanical garden. It supports the Botany courses given at the Faculty and more particularly the systematic Botany course of Bloc 2 Bioscience engineering.

The Botanical Garden presents the diversity of flowering plants, or Angiosperms, with both woody and herbaceous plants. The plants are classified and arranged according to a phylogenetic logic: the botanical route reproduces the evolutionary path of Angiosperms, while adding a landscape and recreational dimension.

"During the Botany course, students must learn to recognize, name and classify plants. This botanical garden is a wonderful pedagogical and mnemonic tool that will help our students in this learning process. The garden design was inspired by the pathways of the biological evolution of flowering plants, which means that closely related plants during the evolution of the species were arranged close to each other within the garden. By visiting the garden, students will be able to better remember the not always simple classification of plants,"explains Professor Patrick du Jardin, who initiated the project.

The Botanical Garden is already accessible to students but is still under construction. In the long term, more than 400 species are expected to bloom in the Botanical Garden.
