Wasabi is a teaching and research platform for urban agriculture and urban and peri-urban biodiversity.
ASABI stands for the WAllonne Platform for Innovative Systems in Agriculture and Urban BIodiversity. Over 5 hectares of the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (University of Liège) are dedicated to learning about new forms of urban and peri-urban agriculture : green roofs, greenhouses on roofs, vertical farms, container farming, permaculture, aquaponics,... A botanical garden allows the study of the plant diversity while other tools such as controlled fallow, vegetative structures,… mimicking natural ecosystems enable a broader study of biodiversity. As an educational and citizen tool, WASABI will be completed by a rain garden, a didactic walkway and a community garden.
Unique in Europe, this institutional research platform benefits from the support of Europe and Wallonia (Belgium). Four main themes have been identified:
